Solediction feature: Interview with Sais

"Sais has all the star qualities. Everything about him was ambiguous and open to interpretation. Colorful and vibrant, he stood out from the crowd. People thought he was immortal, just as as a star seems neither to age nor to disappear. His words were like his presence--fascinating. diverse, strange, their meaning unclear. Such is the power you can command by transforming yourself into a glittering object."

Check out an interview Team SD's Ralph Lorne had with the man after the jump.

Give our readers a breakdown of the meaning behind your name and why you chose it.
Sais is pronounced size. I wanted something unique and simple although a lot of people pronounce it says or Sah-eez when they see me lol.

Can you recall the moment you knew you wanted to make music?
Yeah I do. I was listening to Nas, "The World is Yours". It was at that exact moment that I knew that I wanted to make music also. At its purest, rap can be a beautiful thing. I am just trying to express my thoughts in my own unique way, while pleasing the fans that I have acquired in the meantime.

What fascinates you the most about the fashion? Music? Yourself?
With fashion, although at times regarded as stylish, I don't take it as serious as people may think. I've had my fashion no-no's and just like to dress according to what I'm feeling at the time. With music, it's the different flows, I may be a fan of flow a little more than actual lyricism. The way a song is delivered is something that can make a break it. I am not really fascinated with myself, but I can see why people would be fascinated with me. (Humor like that gets lost in text.)

At www.lifesais.com you frequently post enlightening and entertaining material. What motivated you to get into blogging?
I've always had a good relationship with people that respect what I do on the creative tip, but felt that sometimes I distanced myself. www.lifesais.com is a way to see what interests me musically and I feel gives an insight on other things that interests me.
I feel people respect it, because it's genuine, I never accept requests from people to promote their music or represent anything I don't believe in. I also would rather represent myself then have my message skewed by a third party.

There's a ton of hype centered around a variety of thing. Is hype a good or bad thing?
Hype is not necessarily a bad thing in the beginning stages. I have been drawn to things that are hype that have turned out to be an actual quality product. It starts to get negative when hype generates, copies that usually just live off the original quality product. That is when the message gets lost. The goal or aim of the original product is blurred when forced to coexist with copycats that might be misconstrued as the real thing.

What are your feelings about the current state of hip hop? Does every artist have their place, or are there artist tainting the image of the genre?
I have to take a neutral stance on it. I see that a lot of it is becoming a hybrid of pop, which isn't necessarily a bad thing if that is what you're into. Who am I to say, "Nah, don't listen to that, listen to this, this that real hip hop." I think what is happening is that there is a sub-genre of Rap/Hip-Hop that is occurring right now and it's just being classified under the umbrella of hip hop. The corporate aspect of the game taints hip hop more-so than individual artists. I do believe the bar has been lowered over the years on what a fan might deem as quality lyricism, but as a whole there is still some good hip hop out there.

When can we expect your next body of work musically, and what will the nature of it be?
I'm constantly changing my mind, but I will have a new mixtape soon, entitled O2 as in Overachiever 2 and as in Oxygen which will have original production and also me rapping over some of my favorite beats.. After that I will go one of two ways. I will do an album entitled ROBOT which will be a themed project telling a story of a boy's dehumanization into robot form due to getting his heart broken, it will be analogous to expectations of society for a man to be a player and his role in the hip hop culture and his role as a loving person in a relationship. The other will bea mixtape called S.A.I.S. which will stand for Surrender And I'll Stop which will focus on flow and lyricism. In the meantime I'll drop audio through www.lifesais.com.
